Bava Libera Barbera d’Asti
The Bava family can trace its impressive history in and around the village of Cocconato back to the early 1600s, but it was in 1911 that the Cantine Bava, as a commercial winery, was born. Since then the winery has been helmed by six successive generations of the Bava family, all striving to make the very best Barbera possible from their vineyards. Today, 50 hectares throughout Monferrato and L…

Crotin 1897 Aris Freisa d’Asti
“The name Crotin 1897 refers to all the years Daniela’s land has been in her family. She met her Calabrian husband in veterinary school–they both practice natural medicine for animals–and their three boys grew up in Calabria, by the sea. Going back home to make organic wine from the native grapes of Piemonte has been a family affair.
Best Italian White Wine
La Guardiense Aicon Falanghina Del Sannio
Falanghina has a history that goes all the way back to the Roman ages. A white grape varietal that is grown almost exclusively in the Campania region of Italy. This grape was used in the production of Falernian, the famous wine Roman Emperors used to drink and the inspiration for Falerno Del Massico.
Tasting Notes
This wine gives off a lovely stone fruit, green apple, and acacia flower aroma with secondary notes of pear, tangerine, and peach. Mineral-driven with a bracing fresh acidity that is both balanced and pleasing.

Vallena Soave
If there’s any classic style of white wine from Italy that deserves a deeper look, it’s Soave. Virtual oceans of it are exported and drunk annually every year, but it’s largely overlooked as simple, quaffable, house wine. One sip of Vallena’s example, though, will convince you that this misunderstood wine region can produce some seriously delicious bottles.
Tasting Notes
The practice of drying grapes to concentrate flavour, sugar, and by extension, alcohol, developed in response to the region’s cooler climate: without the heat necessary to reliably ripen red grapes, this was the workaround. However, that same reliably cool climate is perfect for aromatic white grapes like Soave’s Garganega. Vallena’s example comes from 40-year old vines, proof that care and attention in the vineyard and winery can make white wines full of character and complexity. Enjoy this unoaked white at a well-chilled 6 C over the next 2-3 years.

Terlan Pinot Grigio
“Our Pinot Grigio pairs stimulating fruit – reminiscent of Williams pear, lychee and white melon – with the floral aromatic character of a freshly mown meadow. With its finely balanced components – from aromas of black tea to exotic fruity nuances of melon and ripe grapefruit – this is a superbly full and at the same time mellow wine,” from the winery.

The specific region where this wine hails from is called Colline Pescaresi, which lands in the hills behind the coastal town of Pescara. Best Italian Red Wine

Idi Di Marzo Montepulciano
If you didn’t know, Montepulciano is another form of Sangiovese. The De Cherico family estate is located in the heart of Abruzzo’s most splendid viticultural district-in Villamagna, in Chieti. Pajaru Solu Primitivo
Ahh Primitivo, another word for Zin, but if you search for the roots of Zinfandel, you will find that it came from Croatia, well at least that is what current research tells us today. Primitivo is usually grown in and around Puglia and is known for its bold rich blackberry flavours, dark chocolate and hints of black licorice. Tasting Notes
Primitivo is usually grown in and around Puglia and is known for its bold rich blackberry flavours, dark chocolate and hints of black licorice. The resulting wines are bold in flavour and dark, inky and have big tannins and big alcohol. There are several zones around the Salento peninsula, to note such as Primitivo Di Manduria, and Salento IGT. Incidentally it was Italians that brought this varietal over to the United States and introduced it to the vineyards in California. The name “Primitivo” means “early ripening”. Tenuta Del Pajaru is part of the De Cherico Family of Wineries in Italy. Grandpa Laurentino founded the Puglian estate in the late 1960’s at a time where southern wines were undervalued and underappreciated. It was a risk to be sure. Located in Manduria, a few kilometres from the sea, the landscape is rugged and filled with ochre red earth and historic olive groves. This is hard land to farm: the soils have large amounts of compact limestone which requires the utmost patience and dedication to work. The resulting wines that are made at this estate mimic what the De Cherico family’s philosophy of using only native varietals. It is here that the Primitivo grape shines. Concentrated cherry in its core with baked plums, warm spice, hints of mineral and anise in a full-bodied example of this ancient varietal.
